Skill Development

Emergene believes in training farmers, women and value chain partners in using different agricultural tools and in the technologies to upgrade the skills. We aim to create multiple programs in farming practices, input selection, harvesting methods, weather and price forecasting, post-harvest methods, produce storage and marketing of produce. The main focus of the Ministry of Agriculture is stabilizing food grain production to ensure food security. For sustaining higher levels of production, it is necessary to target new areas of food grain production, while promoting conservation agriculture in the high production areas, to maintain current levels of productivity. New technologies are needed to break yield barriers, utilize inputs a more efficiently and diversify to more sustainable and higher value cropping pattern.

For example, Israel is a world leader in agricultural research and development, which has led to dramatic increases in the quantity and quality of the country’s crops. And is a major exporter of fresh produce and a world leader in agricultural technologies despite the fact that the geography of the country is not naturally conducive to agriculture. More than half of the land area is desert, the climate and lack of water resources do not favors farming. Only 20% of the land area is naturally arable. The drive to increase yields and crop quality has led to the development of new seed and plant varieties, as well as to innovations such as organic soil conditioner which, when mixed with local soils boosts crop yields. China is the second country to become an emerging power in the organic farming area, where a leap in organic farming can be witnessed.

Bringing such technologies from countries like Israel and introducing them here in India would be fabulous. In India, again it would be great to introduce such new technologies to show as successful use cases. With this background, we aim to promote sustainable agriculture through climate change adaptation measures by introducing organic farming and develop skills in organic farming to the farming community. The major thrust for enhancing agriculture productivity especially in rainfed areas is focusing on integrated farming, soil health management, and synergizing resource conservation. Organic farming is treated as a social movement or a reverse to conventional agriculture which focuses much on the capital input on the land. It has long been treated as a good method for smallholders to compete with large-scale mechanized agricultural farmers in the market for its demand on intensive labor and relatively small-scale field.

Skill development and entrepreneurship efforts across the country have been highly fragmented so far as opposed to developed countries, where the percentage of skilled workforce is between 60 % and 90 % of the total workforce.
